80th Independence Day Celebrations and Grama Saba Meetings Organized by SHEPHERD, St. Joseph’s College(Autonomous), Tiruchirapalli.

On the occasion of the 80th Independence Day, Grama Sabha meetings were convened across the village panchayats of Nagamangalam, Sethurappatti, Alundur, Inam Mathur, and Inamkulathur. These villages were adopted under the Extension Department (SHEPHERD) of St. Joseph’s College and the Ministry of Education’s Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) 2.0.

In accordance with the directives of the Union Ministry of Education, the events were conducted under the guidance of the College Principal, Rev. Dr. Arockiam, S.J., the leadership of the Director of the Extension Department, Rev. Dr. Sahayaraj, S.J., and in the presence of UBA Coordinator, Dr. Alexander.

Key sessions and awareness initiatives addressed during the meetings included:

* Information & Welfare Schemes: In Sannasipatti village (Inam Mathur Panchayat), Mr. S. Lenin (Senior Coordinator and UBA Asst. Coordinator) addressed the public regarding the installation of an LED display board at the Panchayat office to broadcast updates on women’s entrepreneurship training, employment opportunities, and government welfare schemes.

* Waste Management & Sanitation: In Alundur, Mr. Jeyaseelan (Coordinator) spoke on Solid Waste Management and the Swachh Bharat mission. Ms. Yasothai (Coordinator) highlighted precautionary preventive measures and sanitation improvements required for the upcoming monsoon season.

* Renewable Energy & Conservation: Mr. Joseph Christu Raja and Ms. Ratchana (Coordinators) explained the implementation of small-scale windmills, rainwater harvesting tanks, and solar streetlights installed under UBA. Mr. Sudhagar (Coordinator) further elaborated on rainwater harvesting techniques and sapling plantation.

The meetings were attended by the Block Development Officer (BDO), Deputy Block Development Officer, Zonal Officer, Village Administrative Officers (VAOs), Panchayat Secretaries, local residents, and college students.

In addition, Independence Day celebrations were organized across more than 20 SHEPHERD adopted villages and urban slum settlements. Commemorative activities included sapling plantation drives, sports competitions with prize distributions, guest lectures, drug-abuse awareness campaigns and the administration of the National Integration Pledge.
